Chapter 16

John made it back to the walls of Terminus Est with hardly a moment to spare.

Gwynevere’s much-vaunted hour had proven to barely be forty-five minutes in length. While John had been binding Minerva to his side and making her a full member of his harem and his Wargear, the seven members of the Brash Busters had flown through the Deadlands with the sort of speed normally reserved for migratory birds.

Several of the women had arranged themselves on the walls to watch their approach, Aoryl chief among them. The elf peered through the forest with a kind of looking glass, which Hawk must have scrounged up for her from Gwynevere’s storage space.

The elf turned at John’s approach. She noted the gun strapped to his back, and a faint smile lit up her face.

“Glad to see you did your duty, Master,” she whispered, her smile turning into a grin.

“Like we needed to see it,” Petra added with a snort. The blacksmith’s daughter had her hammer out and was tossing it idly from hand to hand like she couldn’t wait to use it to smash some imperial heads. “We could hear it. The whole damn castle heard you fucking that demon.”

“Really? I hope they got a good show,” John said.

The ease with which he’d slipped into his role as man of the castle still shocked him sometimes. The man he’d once been would have been… well, he wouldn’t have exactly been ashamed of being overheard with a woman like Minerva, but he would have at least tried to be a little humble about it.

Humility was no longer one of John’s strong suits, and the women loved him for it.

“We certainly did,” Fiona said. “Made me a little jealous, to tell you the truth. Good gods that woman’s a screamer!”

The blonde stood a short distance away from John’s other women, poring over a sheet of parchment with Hawk and his two women. The young man had evidently drafted both Trixie and Mona as his lieutenants, and they’d fallen into the work without a hint of enmity or rancor between them. It made John proud to know they were living the ‘Devonte Way’ without any fights.

“We enjoyed listening in, my Lord,” Mona said, gazing up at John without a hint of shame for her own situation. “It made me want to find a chamber with similar sonic properties later tonight when I bed down with Hawk and Trixie…”

Now that would be a sight—or, more specifically, a sound.

John chuckled. “It’s not a competition,” he said, favoring the trio with a smirk. “Which is good because if it was… well, I’d be winning. Now tell me about these ‘Busters’.”

Hawk snapped to attention. “They’re riding in directly from the north,” he said, gesturing with Fiona in that direction. “They should be upon us at any minute now, my Lord. Are you going to fight them off yourself?”

“Will you turn into a dragon?” Trixie asked. The former barmaid looked like she’d dragged herself to the walls just in case John decided to do just that.
